Slancio was written for Australian guitarist Libby Myers as part of her doctoral work on collaboration and identity. The piece draws slightly from a number of musical works which were influential to Libby: pieces by Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and Amy Winehouse. This melodic material is changed mostly beyond recognition, but still inhabits the fibres of the work. The title and inspiration for the piece was from the idea of a musician "launching" themselves into their future, like an arrow. Having been a practicing guitarist myself, I remember the hours upon hours upon hours of practice required to become a professional performer—and this piece is a celebration of, and a tribute—to the blood, sweat and tears of musicians transitioning into a professional career. —Amy Brandon
